Current Meta Overview

The Borders RTS meta shifts frequently during early alpha development by Smokestack Games. Tier rankings reflect community consensus and competitive results across all seven maps — from Europe chokepoint wars to Oceania trade economies. We update rankings after major patches and Season 1 balance changes through September 1, 2026.

Tier lists split into two categories: building rankings for structure priority and strategy rankings for playstyle viability. Cross-reference both when planning ranked sessions alongside build orders and ranked tips.

No tier list replaces map knowledge. S-tier buildings underperform on wrong geography — ports rank lower inland on Africa while dominating Japan. Read map guides before blindly following rankings.

Tier Ranking System

S Tier — Dominant picks defining the current meta. Build or execute these strategies in most serious lobbies for consistent results. Examples shift between patches; see dedicated pages for live rankings.

A Tier — Strong, flexible options that win with proper execution. Slightly map-dependent or counterable but never dead picks. Most hybrid builds live here.

B Tier — Situational picks excelling in niche lobbies or countering specific metas. Viable for experts who know when to deploy them.

C Tier and below — Underperforming in current alpha balance. Fun for casual play but avoid in ranked climbing unless buffed in future patches announced via Discord — no official Trello exists per our community page.

Using Tier Lists Effectively

Combine tier rankings with promo codes that amplify S-tier openings — EMPIREASCEND for economy structures, UNITBOOST for military strategies. Validate code status on our code checker before ranked sessions.

Track personal performance with the win tracker when testing tier list recommendations. Your lobby skill bracket may favor different picks than top-ranked players.

Patch History & Season 1

Season 1 battle pass content may introduce cosmetics without balance changes, or surprise buffs during events. Monitor patch notes through official Smokestack Games channels.

Territorial.io inspiration means core expand-and-conquer loop stays stable while buildings and strategies receive alpha tuning. Expect tier shifts every few weeks during active development.

How to Read Tier Shifts

When patches drop, compare building costs and output rates in the items database against previous tier assumptions before re-ranking mentally. Community tier lists update after verification lobbies confirm changes — not from patch note speculation alone.

Strategy tier shifts often lag building tier shifts by one to two weeks as players experiment with new optimal timings. A buffed structure may not immediately elevate its parent strategy if execution requirements exceed average player skill in ranked brackets.

Personal tier lists based on win tracker data may differ from global consensus — if you win 65% running B-tier strategies on your main map, prioritize personal data over generic rankings until sample sizes exceed thirty matches.
