Borders RTS Economy Build
Economy Build Overview
The economy build in Borders RTS prioritizes resource generation over early military scale, banking on superior income to overwhelm opponents mid-game with larger armies and better infrastructure. This path suits spacious maps like North America and trade-rich Oceania where early rushes are less common.
Core resources — gold, food, concrete, and gasoline — all benefit from economic investment. Farms sustain troop upkeep; mines and trade generate gold; refineries supply gasoline for motorized pushes; concrete funds expansion buildings. See the full items list for every structure cost.
Economy builds fail without scouting. If neighbors run military rushes, invest minimum barracks and border troops before full greed. Hybrid defense-economy openings work on Europe where diplomacy masks rush timing.
Opening Build Order
Minutes 0–3: Claim neutral tiles toward high-value zones. Press B and place two farms immediately, then a trade port if coastal or mine if inland. Redeem GOLDENAGE or EMPIREASCEND from our codes page before spawning for compounded gold bonuses.
Minutes 3–6: Add a third farm and begin refinery if gasoline demand projects high — essential on Africa and large continental maps. Open trade negotiations with T key per our trade guide, selling surplus gold for food during army buildup.
Minutes 6–10: Transition to barracks and armory while maintaining farm production. Economy advantage means larger simultaneous troop batches than rush opponents who stalled on low food income. Use the resource calculator to optimize timing.
Mid-Game Economic Snowball
Scale trade ports on coastal maps and duplicate farms inland. Stockpile concrete for forward bases during expansion covered in our expansion guide. Economic leads convert to territory leads when you outproduce enemies on every front simultaneously.
Avoid over-trading from weakness — fair trades build alliances; desperate trades fund enemy militaries. Break trade partnerships when you hold material advantage and shift to military production for conquest phase.
Late-game economy supports nuke programs and superweapons per our nukes guide. Rich economies rebuild armies faster after conventional losses, maintaining pressure toward the 80% win threshold.

Economy Scaling Milestones
Milestone one: food income exceeds current troop upkeep by 20% margin — signals safe barracks scaling. Milestone two: gold income supports simultaneous building plus unit production without pausing either. Milestone three: gasoline production matches planned motorized push duration on maps requiring mobile warfare.
Fake economy signals confuse neighbors — build visible farms while hiding trade port income on coastal secondary islands when possible on Oceania. Opponents who misread your economic strength commit to wars they cannot sustain against hidden gold reserves.
Economy players win wars by outproducing, not outfighting early. Accept minor border losses while maintaining production growth if total territory percentage still climbs — trading 5% border tiles for two minutes of uninterrupted farm construction often net-positive on Asia scale maps.
