How to Win in Borders RTS
The Win Condition Explained
Victory in Borders RTS triggers when your nation controls approximately 80% of total map territory. Smokestack Games set this threshold to prevent endless stalemates while still requiring near-total dominance rather than slight majorities. Monitor territory percentage in the UI throughout the match.
Alternative elimination victories occur when all significant opponents surrender or disconnect, but the 80% rule is the standard path in competitive lobbies. Plan every mid-game decision toward percentage accumulation, not merely surviving or looking strong on one front.
Territory percentage combines land tiles and strategic zones across all seven maps — from compact Europe to sprawling Asia. Naval maps like Japan count island tiles equally; do not ignore water-separated territory when calculating your path to 80%.
Early Game Setup for Victory
Winning starts with efficient neutral phase expansion covered in our expansion guide. Every uncontested tile early reduces the total percentage opponents can collectively hold later — your 80% goal becomes mathematically easier when rivals start from smaller bases.
Execute hybrid economy-military openings that scale into mid-game snowballs. Redeem EMPIREASCEND or GRANDSTRATEGY from codes for accelerated early economy that converts to larger armies by minute ten.
Eliminate the weakest neighbor first when borders contact. Absorb their territory percentage directly while capturing production infrastructure. Failed rushes that stall at 30% enemy territory waste troops better spent elsewhere.
Mid-Game Dominance & Coalition Breaking
Leading players face coalition wars — multiple opponents attacking simultaneously to prevent your 80% run. Break coalitions through targeted diplomacy: trade with one enemy while destroying another via T key deals from our trade guide.
Strike the second-strongest player before the strongest when possible. Removing challengers prevents two-front endgames where neither opponent can reach 80% but both prevent your climb by splitting your armies.
Maintain gasoline and food pipelines during extended wars. Armies that stall at 65% territory from supply collapse lose to refreshed defenders — use the resource calculator to prevent logistical failure.
Closing the Final 20%
The jump from 60–70% to 80% is often harder than reaching 60%. Remaining opponents fight desperately with combined forces and possibly superweapons. Read how to get nukes and nuke protection before endgame stalemates.
Naval maps require amphibious invasions for final island territories on Oceania. Land-only pushes cannot reach 80% when water isolates remaining enemy bases.

Victory Percentage Management
At 70% territory, opponents treat you as primary threat regardless of prior alliances. Expect coordinated attacks, nuke strikes, and desperate trade embargoes — prepare defensive reserves before pushing from 70% rather than during reactive crisis management.
Sometimes winning requires eliminating second-place player before first-place when you trail — unusual but valid when leader holds 55% and second holds 25% while you hold 15%. Coalition math matters more than individual duels approaching endgame.
Victory timing accelerates by capturing high-density territory clusters rather than sparse border strips. Target enemy core regions where each battle tile adds more percentage than frontier skirmishes on elongated borders.
